Guidance for professional executors

To pass Shelter a gift of a set sum of money, please email our Senior Legacy Administration Manager, Tom Newton, at legacyadmin@shelter.org.uk (or include a cover letter with any cheque sent by post), confirming:

• the full name and last address of the person who has left the gift to Shelter

• the gift amount (please include a copy or extract of the will showing the gift to Shelter)

• the date any bank transfer to Shelter was made

• the contact details for any family members or friends who would be happy for us to contact them to say thank you.

Shelter’s registered name is 'Shelter, the National Campaign for Homeless People Ltd’ and our Charity Registration Number in England and Wales is 263710.

Once you have begun the administration of the estate, please forward us copies of the following documents. This helps us fulfil our regulatory obligations to our trustees and beneficiaries:

• a copy of the will and any codicils showing the gift to Shelter

• a schedule of the estate assets and liabilities as recorded at the date of death for probate purposes (or copy form IHT400)

• any inheritance tax calculation already completed

• any relevant property valuation reports that you may have already obtained

• your terms of business and projected costs

• the contact details for any family members or friends who would be happy for us to contact them to say thank you

Please email this information using our contact information. Alternatively, you can post paper copies to us at the address in our contact details.

Preparing final estate accounts

Once the estate administration is complete, please send us a copy of the final estate accounts for our approval before distribution.

We would also be grateful to receive an R185 (Estate Income) form for each financial year in which a distribution has been made for us to reclaim any tax paid on our share of the income
