Services at Shelter Greater Manchester

Shelter Greater Manchester offers free advice and support to anyone who is homeless, in housing need or who has a housing-related problem.

We operate across Greater Manchester with services in our main office on Samuel Ogden Street and in numerous access points across the City. We also deliver services in Rochdale, Trafford, Stockport and Tameside.

Shelter helps thousands of individuals and families facing bad housing and homelessness through the following services at Shelter Greater Manchester:

  • Information Resource
    We provide computers and phones in the centre and at the Inspiring Change HUB in Swan Street for your use in resolving housing debt or welfare benefit issues, or to find information to help you address benefit or debt problems. There is always somebody on hand to guide you to the information you need.

  • Advice Support and Guidance (ASG)
    Specialist advice and support in housing, welfare benefits, debt and dealing with living in the private rented sector. Specialist advice: For complex issues that can’t be resolved by ASG, Shelter advisers offer specialist level advice and support on housing, debt and welfare benefits.

  • Private Rented Sector service
    Set up in response to Shelter’s Rogue Landlords Campaign, this service ensures that tenants are able to access the right advice and support. The support we offer is intended to help you to maintain and sustain your private tenancy or to move on in a planned way.

  • Legal service
    The Legal team offers specialist legal advice to individuals or families with housing problems who are eligible for legal help or Legal Aid in matters such as unlawful evictions and homelessness appeals.

In addition, we offer tailored advice services to tenants of Mosscare Housing, Personal Budgeting Advice in Trafford for welfare benefit claimants moving onto Universal Credit and Accommodation engagement support for people accepted onto the Inspiring Change Manchester Programme.

In partnership with Motiv8: Building Better Opportunities for Greater Manchester

Shelter is a delivery partner of the Motiv8 programme, providing housing advice, welfare benefits and debt support and legal services to help Motiv8 participants struggling with bad housing or homelessness. We are also providing specialist advice via our Helpline Plus telephone service.

Motiv8 supports people to overcome challenges preventing them from moving into training and employment. It is being led by Manchester Athena, a partnership of housing associations working together to transform people’s lives by improving their skills, employment, health and wellbeing.

Motiv8 is funded by £14 million from European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund as part of the Building Better Opportunities programme.

The programme will support over 5,000 people to overcome multiple, complex needs and move them closer to training and work.
