No one should fight bad housing or homelessness alone.
Our specialists at Shelter Manchester offer free, expert advice to those who need it – no matter what their situation. Some of the ways our specialists can help include:
Rent arrears – possession proceedings
We regularly act for tenants whose landlords have issued possession proceedings over rent arrears.
If you’re in arrears due to a problem with outstanding repairs, we’ll work to get a surveyor’s report and, if necessary, a court order for repairs and compensation. We can also apply for an adjournment of proceedings, which will allow you to repay the arrears at a few pounds a week, based on your personal circumstances.
Homelessness and the duty to house you
We regularly assist people who come to us because they have nowhere to stay that night, including those who’ve been told they cannot make a homeless application with the authority. We can write letters or apply for court orders on your behalf to make sure the council provides you with accommodation.
Action over disrepair
Shelter Legal Services will take action on your behalf if your landlord won’t respond to requests for repair.
Legal advice and court representation
Shelter Legal Services has successfully taken test cases to the Court of Appeal, House of Lords (now the Supreme Court) and European Court of Justice, setting important precedents for others.
We can take legal action against your landlord or local authority, and can act quickly in an emergency.
