How to find a private rented home

Many landlords and letting agencies advertise online.

Popular websites that advertise house shares and homes to rent are:

Search for local websites or forums that advertise flats, houses or rooms to rent.

Never pay any money without seeing the property first. Try to take someone with you when visiting properties.

Use a letting agent

You can use a letting agent to help you find a private rented home.

Check that the agent is a member of a redress scheme before you take on a tenancy or pay any money.  

Check local newspapers and noticeboards 

Local newspapers often have sections advertising houses or flats to rent or share.

Noticeboards in local shops, community centres or libraries often have adverts for rooms or houses to rent.

Advertise yourself

In your advert, describe the type of place you want, where you'd like to live and how much rent you can afford.

Use free websites such as Spareroom or post your advert on social media sites.

You may also be able to put adverts up for free in local shops or community centres.

If you claim benefits or have a low income

It can be hard to find an affordable private tenancy in many areas.
