Before you move in, you should get a statement that tells you:

• how much rent to pay and when to pay it

• what payment methods you can use

• information on any other charges

Most students in halls of residence have to pay rent each term.

Your accommodation provider should send you a receipt for any payments you make.

What is included in the rent?

Your agreement should tell you what is included in your rent. For example:

• electricity use

• heating and water

• internet

• weekly cleaning of shared areas

Check if you pay for some facilities separately, like washing machines.

A TV licence in halls might only cover shared areas. You might still need your own TV licence if you watch live TV or BBC iPlayer in your bedroom on a plugged in device.

Rent for rooms adapted for disabled students

Student accommodation providers cannot charge extra for an adapted room or flat.

You should be charged the lowest room rate available if both:

• you have a physical or mobility impairment

• your room is designed or significantly adapted for this reason

If you have money problems

Get advice from student support services or the student union if you cannot pay for things like:

• rent

• food

• other essential items

There might be a student hardship fund to help with costs like this. A student advice centre could help you stop money problems getting worse.

If you miss rent payments

Contact student support services or the student union advice centre.

They might help you:

• talk to your accommodation provider

• get money help to repay unpaid rent

• check an eviction notice if you get one
