RATM campaign hits 100k!

2 February 2010

Rage Against the Machine

The Facebook campaign to get Rage Against the Machine to number one at Christmas, which raised tens of thousands for Shelter over the festive season, reached a grand total of £100,000 yesterday.

The grassroots social networking campaign was initiated by Essex couple Tracy and Jon Morter in response to the X Factor monopoly of the Christmas number one spot. They started a Facebook group and generously asked members to donate to Shelter via a Justgiving page when they downloaded the track.

Members of the original group recently decided to give the donations another push to get the total up to a remarkable 100k. They declared 1 February 'Surge Day' and promoted the event across social networks. Yesterday evening, they succeeded in hitting their target.

Louise Parkes, Shelter's Director of Fundraising said; ‘We’re really grateful to everyone who supported the surge yesterday, to all who have donated through the RATM Facebook group, and of course to Tracy and Jon Morter who started this amazing campaign.

'The incredible sum of £100,000 means we can provide even more essential, life-changing advice and support to people in desperate housing need. Many thanks from all of us at Shelter.’
