Thursday 1 March saw a record 1,200 Shelter supporters race to the top of Tower 42 in London, as part of the Vertical Rush challenge.

Participants made their way in waves up the 920 steps - and 42 floors - to raise money for Shelter, and our work supporting the millions of people in Britain who are homeless or in housing need.

Celebrity chefs Gary Rhodes, Tom Aikens and Jason Atherton (pictured) started the race in style, followed by other famous faces including Jon Snow, who was accompanied by colleagues from Channel 4 news.

Teams from Zoopla, Citihub, Redwood Consulting, Qatarlyst, Peabody, Asperity, Incisive, Legal and General, Berkeley Group and Enterprise also completed the tower-running challenge.

The fastest individual times were recorded by:

  • Suzy Walsham in the women’s category, with a time of 5 minutes and 1 second – beating the previous record of 5 minutes 20 seconds
  • Sofie Shore was the fastest non-elite female runner with 5 minutes 59 seconds
  • Thomas Dold in the men’s category, with a time of 3 minutes 58 seconds – breaking the previous record of 4 minutes 22 seconds
  • Fastest non-elite male runner was Andy Taylor, with 4 minutes 57 seconds

Fastest team title goes to the Heron PG runners, captained by Florent Danset, and respect is due to runner Paul Smith, who attempted a record-breaking Vertical Mile, racing up the 920 steps a total of nine times.

The sold-out race was a huge success, with many participants signing up for the 2013 event. All the money raised from Vertical Rush will go towards supporting families in housing need through Shelter’s advice centres.

'I completed Vertical Rush, with my friends yesterday,' said runner Aisha Roberts. 'I thought it was a really well organised, good energy event. It was  a great way to raise money and all the marshals did a great job in keeping us going. I loved taking part and would happily do it again next year!'
