What this course covers

The course will cover key recent updates in housing and homelessness law.

It might not be possible to cover all updates during the session due to time constraints, so we'll also provide a round up booklet with helpful summaries of recent updates after the training.

Homelessness updates

Sessions in summer 2024 are likely to cover:

  • updates to the Homelessness Code of Guidance

  • cases on suitability, such as Webb-Harnden v LB Waltham Forest [2023] and Pickford, R (On the Application Of) v Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council [2024] on bed and breakfast regulations, and the changes to the regulations

  • the Supreme Court's decision on the appropriate remedy for a breach of the duty under s.193 of the Housing Act 1996, R (Imam) v LB Croydon [2023], and follow up High Court cases, SK v RB Windsor and Maidenhead [2024] and Pickford v Sandwell [2024].

  • cases considering s.20 of the Children Act 1989 and after care duties, BC, R (On the Application Of) v Surrey County Council (2023), DF, R (On the Application Of) v Essex County Council (2023)

  • the Homelessness (Suitability of Accommodation)(Amendment)(England) Order 2024 (SI 2024 No 371)

  • a succession case in the Court of Appeal, Rahimi v Westminster CC [2024]

  • the Social Housing (Regulation) Act 2023

  • a High Court case on the Equality Act duties of a public sector landlord, FG, R (On the Application Of) v Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (2024)

  • a High Court case on the prescribed information needed in respect of deposits, Lowe v Governors of Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse [2024]

  • the Migrants Victims of Domestic Abuse Concession
