Housing suitability reviews
Letter templates: Ask for a suitability review
You have 3 weeks to ask for a review.
This is from when you get the offer letter or council decision that the housing is suitable.
Tell the council you'll send more information after getting legal advice.
Ask them to delay their review decision until you've sent the information.
Next steps
When you've asked for a review you should:
Get free legal advice if you can
Send more information and evidence to support your case
Wait for the council's review decision
The review can take up to 8 weeks, or longer if you agree to this.
You might have to move in if the council do not agree to delay the tenancy start date.
The council's review decision
The council must write to you with a review decision.
If your review is successful, the council must find you more suitable housing.
If your review is not successful you could still complain to the council.
For example, if the council has treated you badly or not followed their own policies.
Court appeals
You can only appeal to court if:
the council's review decision is legally wrong
you do not get a final decision in the agreed time limit
You must appeal within 3 weeks of getting your review decision, or the time limit passing.
You need a solicitor. Check if you can get free legal help.
