'No benefits' and 'no children' discrimination when renting

Letter templates: Complain about rental discrimination

If you think a landlord or agent has treated you unfairly, you can:

  • ask them to reconsider

  • report them to your council

With letting agents, you can also complain to their redress scheme.

All letting agents must belong to a scheme that deals with complaints.

Keep records

Keep evidence of:

  • adverts that discriminate

  • calls, emails and messages with the landlord or agent

  • who you talk to and what they say

Give the landlord or agent a chance to fix things. They might realise they have made a mistake.

Tell your council

Your council can fine landlords or agents who break the law.

Find your local council on GOV.UK.

Use our letter templates

Ask your landlord or agent to change their mind about renting to you, or make a complaint.
