Landlord selling your home?
This guide is for private assured tenants.
From 1 May 2026 most renters have this tenancy type.
Check your tenancy type if you need to.
Allowing access to your home
Your landlord might ask for access to your home for:
viewings
surveys
valuations or builder's inspections
Check your tenancy agreement
You do not have to allow access unless your tenancy agreement says so.
See if your tenancy agreement says when you have to allow access to your home.
You can say if times or days are not convenient.
Stopping these visits does not stop your landlord from:
selling the property
evicting you using ground 1A if they take the right legal steps
Pressure from your landlord
Some landlords tell tenants to leave if they want to sell.
Your landlord or their agent must not:
pressure you to move out
threaten you
harass you or be violent
Ask your council for help if this happens.
They can fine landlords who break the rules.
Contact the police if you are in immediate danger.
