814,000 private renters under threat of eviction this winter

New research from Shelter exposes the turmoil facing private renters in England as 1 in 10 – equivalent to 814,000 adults - are now at risk of losing their homes. The figure rises to an estimated 1.1 million people if you include the children in the household.

New Ministry of Justice data, released today, shows between July and September 8,399 landlords in England started Section 21 no fault eviction court proceedings against their tenants – the highest number for seven years.

Homeless accommodation bill hits £1.7bn

Today the government has released new figures revealing the amount being spent by local councils on temporary accommodation for homeless households in England in 2022/23. They reveal:   Councils spent £1.7 billion on temporary accommodation for homeless households between April 2022 and March 2023 This is a 9% increase in spending in just one year. It has increased by 62% in the last five years.   One third of the total was spent on emergency B&Bs and hostels – £565 million – which are often considered the worst accommodation for families with children to live in.

Tenants over-55 hit with a no-fault eviction notice every 16 minutes

In England, a no-fault eviction notice drops through the letterbox of an older private renter every 16 minutes, new research from Shelter reveals. The housing charity’s alarming research, conducted by YouGov and funded by The Co-operative Bank, shines a spotlight on the struggle older renters face in keeping a roof over their heads. Nearly three in ten (28%) private tenants over the age of 55 – which equates to 400,000 people - live in fear of being evicted by their landlord.

Half of working renters only one pay cheque away from losing their home

One in two working private renters in England - 3.2 million adults – wouldn’t have enough in savings to pay their rent for more than a month if they lost their job, new research by Shelter reveals. And shockingly, 2.2 million renters (34%) would be immediately unable to pay their rent from their savings if they lost their job.
