Course summary

This course involves a detailed examination of eligibility, homelessness, priority need, intentionality, and local connection.

You’ll learn about the duties, provision, and suitability of accommodation under Part 7 Housing Act 1996. The training also covers the current statutory framework and the process of homelessness decision-making and challenging decisions.

We’ll also provide materials for self directed learning.

What this course covers

Face to face and webinar training includes:

  • public law issues in the context of homelessness, including practical case studies

  • the duty to make inquiries

  • the prevention and relief duties

  • the homelessness tests: eligibility, homelessness, priority need, intentionality, and local connection

  • suitability of accommodation, temporary accommodation duties and issues

  • reviews, appeals, and judicial review

  • accommodation pending review and appeal

What you'll learn

At the end of this training, you'll be able to:

  • apply public law principles of decision making to homelessness applications

  • understand and apply a wide range of legislation, guidance and case law

  • summarise the prevention and relief duties brought in by the Homelessness Reduction Act

Who this training is for

You should already be familiar with the key sections of Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996 for this course.

You might be a housing adviser, lawyer or work for a local authority in housing or homelessness.
