This course covers key legislation and guidance in homelessness law, the homelessness application process, homelessness tests and allocation of housing.

You’ll learn to apply homelessness law to recognise who is homeless and in priority need, identify local authority key duties, including assessment, prevention, and relief, and learn how those duties can end.

What this course covers

Face to face and webinar training includes:

  • local authority duty to make enquiries

  • assessing eligibility, homelessness, priority need, intentional homelessness, and local connection

  • review and appeal rights

  • the Homelessness Code of Guidance

  • housing options, housing allocation, and homelessness prevention

  • relevant case law and legislation, including the Homelessness Reduction Act

At the end of this training, you'll be able to:

  • identify circumstances that trigger a council's duty to start a homelessness investigation

  • describe key factors governing eligibility for assistance, homelessness, priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection

  • advise on the duties of a local authority towards a homeless person

  • identify broad legal issues arising in the allocation of social housing
