DIY skills changing lives

From mowing lawns to decorating homes, Rob uses practical skills to help people overcome housing challenges so they can focus on their family and their future.

Helping people make a fresh start

Rob is a Shelter DIY Skills Adviser in Merseyside. As part of our partnership with B&Q, he carries out DIY tasks, from decorating to gardening, in people’s homes, as well as sharing his skills. The benefits can be huge – often helping people avoid eviction or settle in after being homeless.

'I see every day how a bit of garden maintenance is a massive part of helping people stay settled and secure in our community. It might sound surprising, but for many renters, an overgrown garden can be a major source of anxiety. When the grass gets long and weeds take over, it can lead to enforcement action.

'It’s rarely about someone simply ‘not bothering’ with the garden. Usually there’s a human story behind the overgrowth. It might be a family hit by the cost-of-living crisis who simply can’t afford to fix a broken mower. Sometimes when someone is struggling with their mental health, the garden just feels like one hurdle too many.

'By showing up with the right tools and a bit of DIY know-how, we’re helping the tenant meet their lease obligations. We’re clearing the path so they can focus on their family and their future.

'I also spend a lot of my time teaching practical DIY skills, like the basics of painting and decorating. The best part of my job isn’t the DIY. It’s the look on someone’s face when the job is done. It’s amazing how much a bit of DIY and a tidy lawn can do to give someone a fresh start.
