Speaking up for social homes
Shelter volunteers in Sheffield share powerful stories that highlight the need for more social homes.
Voices for social homes
One volunteer talks about a recent event in Sheffield, where volunteers from Shelter's local hub shared heartfelt spoken word pieces they created to highlight the need for social homes.
A chilly March evening in the centre of Sheffield, a cavernous warehouse fills with people. Shelter’s event. OUR event.
‘Build Social. Build Sheffield’.
Over 100 people from the local community, along with council dignitaries and politicians, have come to see us, and the nerves are starting to hit.
We’re not trained actors, public speakers or artists.
We are people who have lived and survived the housing emergency and the traumas surrounding it.
We’re here tonight with our stories to tell.
The desire and passion to make a difference burns within us all.
This is our pride and joy. Each one of us involved tonight carries their heart and soul for all to share. You can feel it in the very atmosphere. See it on the faces of those watching.
The evening goes down a storm.
Volunteers power Shelter’s work in many ways, from building momentum by organising events like this to cheering marathoners as they run for home.
Whatever you love, it’s a brilliant way to build confidence, find new purpose, and make new friends, all while fighting the housing emergency.
