Homelessness affects almost every part of the country. For many, it’s a life of uncertainty and anxiety - a roof over their head, but nowhere to truly belong.

Temporary accommodation is not a home. It can often mean:

  • families not knowing where they will be living from one week to the next

  • living in one room in cramped conditions, sharing one bed between multiple people

  • being placed so far away that it’s a struggle to get to school and work on time

  • families are disconnected from their friends, family, and support network

  • living in terrible conditions for months to years

This is damaging children and impacting their childhood.

Black-led households and temporary accommodation

18% of Black-led households in temporary accommodation have been there for more than five years. Longer stays make the negative effects of temporary accommodation worse, and the impact of this is devastating ─ particularly for children.

Single mothers and temporary accommodation

Single women with children are also hugely over-represented in temporary accommodation. Over 43,000 single mothers are living in temporary accommodation right now.

The solution

Through our services, we help people in temporary accommodation find quality and affordable homes. We believe that no child should grow up in temporary accommodation, but because there are so few social homes, we continue to see the numbers increasing.

We've helped get the government to commit to building more social rent homes - homes that will help end the housing emergency. But people facing homelessness need help right now.

Donate now to stand with families and children facing homelessness.

Your donation won't be restricted to a single project but will be used wherever it's needed most to help those fighting for their right to a safe home.

I chose to support Shelter because the rising cost of housing has made stable living conditions increasingly out of reach for many... I want to be a part of the effort to change this and help create a more fair and liveable housing system for everyone. - Anonymous donor
