Everybody needs a home. It's about more than just a roof over your head: having a home allows us to put down roots in a community.
While working shifts as a supermarket assistant, Chris became homeless at 46. For six months, he slept in a tent near Sheffield city centre, cycling six miles to work each way.
Chris was forced into homelessness after getting into rent arrears. He has autism, which often makes life feel overwhelming, especially keeping on top of everyday tasks, like managing money.
After reaching out to the Shelter Sheffield hub, Chris moved into a new social home with the help of our fantastic support workers.
'Shelter helped me to find that solution. All my caseworkers have really catered to me as an individual. They have all the background. They come to my environment, think about my past experiences and put all the pieces together. They have the foundation. We come together to work through the problems.'

Home is a fundamental human need.
But today, that right is being denied to millions of people across the country whose lives are blighted by homelessness, unfit housing conditions, sky-high rents, insecurity and the threat of eviction.
