What if you faced eviction for complaining about a gas leak?
Tom’s shared house was never perfect — far from it. Not only did their landlord padlock the boiler in a cupboard so the heating only came on if it was freezing outside, but he’d let himself in and nose around while his tenants were out.
That would be intimidating for anyone, but for Tom, who’s on medication for anxiety, it made life really difficult.
Then, when Tom complained that the faulty oven was causing a gas leak, the landlord attempted to evict him by changing the locks and putting all his stuff in the shed when Tom was out.
That was when Tom called us.
How we helped
Our team of legal experts made sure Tom got the support he needed and helped him get a court order permitting his return to the property.
When his landlord got aggressive, we stepped in, and in July 2018 we went back to court with a discrimination case. We won, and Tom was awarded several thousand pounds in compensation.
Today, there are many more people just like Tom across the UK, facing bad housing, homelessness and rogue landlords. But unlike him, they’re struggling alone, without any legal advice or support.
A gift from you could pay for someone like Tom to get legal advice, and help them find safe, secure housing.
Help us reach more people like Tom now.
We strive every day to give people the help they need, and we campaign relentlessly to achieve our vision of a safe, secure, affordable home for everyone.
